Sail to Thomas Island

Monday 14th September 2015

Finally we have left the marina at Abell Point. As usual up here the wind is SE 15-20 knots.

Optimising the current related to tides is the other major part of the equation. The sail across Pioneer Bay to Pioneer Point is brisk, with a fair number of  wind shifts, resulting in a big round up on Wilparina.

Once we rounded the point, sailed over to North Molle and tacked down the Molle Channel. Then crossing into Whitsunday Passage, it was trouble free until we reached the bottom end of Dent Island and the tide had turned. It was hard work from there on tacking into and adverse current, of up to 3 knots.

Eventually we arrived at our planned anchorage at Thomas Island, 8 hrs after leaving Airlie. It took a lot longer than expected, but we were overwhelmed by the strength of the current against us.

Finally anchored at Thomas Island, it is a good anchorage with  a nice beach. The only problem was the Easterly swell that kept building, and made for a rolly night. We had Sundowners on Mica with Mark and Janet who had to collect the meat we had collected for them in Cannonvale. We were all pretty tired and had dinner on board our own boats.

It put the TV on and watched the demise of Tony Abbott, not really expecting to see anything like that.
