On the Marina at Abell Point

Wednesday 9th September 2015

We are going to be at the marina for a few days, so spent most of the morning doing the normal maintenance, housekeeping and re provisioning duties.

Carole did some more washing, I helped Wilparina go out and empty their holding tanks before coming back to the fuel wharf to refuel. I then topped up our 2 jerry cans so we are also carrying maximum fuel when we head out.

The weather forecast is improving a bit, and a Monday departure is now looking more likely.

After lunch we walked around to Port of Airlie, a development which has expanded a lot since we were last here. It is a low tide today and the beach does not look all that attractive. The main ferry service to Hamilton Island now runs from there.

Low tide at Airlie

On the way we walked along the shore past the Whitsunday Sailing Club. Just off the point where the club is located, there is a ketch that was washed up on the rocks last week, on the day we were sailing around the outside of Haslewood Island. It was also very windy at Airlie on the same day.

Looks like we weren't the only one's experiencing a strong breeze

Yachties that have gone to the Yacht Club for lunch will have to wait a fair time to wait for high tide to get their dinghies afloat

The Port of Airlie Marina is impressive, and there is growing infrastructure there, although no match for what is available at Abell Point. One of our friends, on Soleil are around here because they were unable to get a berth at Abell Point. It is a bit amazing how many berths are available between Abell Point and the Port of Airlie, and getting berths can still be challenging.

We walked through the ferry terminal, which was pretty quiet, but very impressive and the infrastructure is certainly in place for future growth. Once the tourism industry gets a lift up here, they have plenty of capacity to absorb any growth.

On our walk back, we ran into Dave from Soleil, and briefly exchanged departure plans. If the forecast remains, we could have a bit of a flotilla leaving on Monday
