Monday 15th June 2015
Finally, we leave Yeppoon after 5 nights at Keppel Bay Marina (2 more
than we had planned). The weather is still pretty ordinary, but the wind
strength was forecast back to 15 to 20 knots SE and the seas are settling down,
but are still on the rough side.
Last night we had a couple of squalls with
heavy falls accompanied by strong winds. This morning at 6.30 am, when we cast
off, there was a light drizzle., and 12 -15 knots of breeze in the marina.
There was an exodus of boats (7 that we
counted) departing from 6 -6.30 am, and all heading North. Two of the other
Hanses on our marina arm, “Eureka” and “Soleil” were amongst them.
We had a good sail for all but the last
hour when the wind dropped completely, we were then hit by a quick squall, and
the wind did not really return to it’s former strength, before it moved around a bit
to the North.
Koonya Sailing Alongside
We were at Pearl Bay in 7 hours, with an
average speed of 6.9 knots. The sea was pretty lumpy off the first entrance to
Pearl Bay, so we took the long way around to enable us to get our sails down in
flatter water, and then motored in anchored.
Anchored at Pearl Bay
Just as the anchorage was seeming to
flatten out a series of squalls came through lasting most of the afternoon.
Mark and Janet are coming to Mica for
dinner tonight, Roast Pork and baked vegies. They had not yet inflated their
dinghy since we left Pittwater, so it
was a major exercise to retrieve in from the bottom of “Janet’s Locker” and get it inflated, in
between the persistent squalls. Eventually they succeeded and we had an
enjoyable dinner.
The wild wind and rain resumed later in the
evening and it was a rough anchorage, not ideal for a good night’s sleep.
