Golf, more shopping and an otherwise quiet day in Bundaberg

Sunday 7th June 2015

We decided to share a rental car from the marina to get us around today, and to allow us to do a bit more heavy shopping. The car is rented out by the marina at a reasonable rate, and is an old Camry with 225,000 km on the clock, but still goes remarkably well.

At a bit after 9am, Mark, Carole and I headed off in the direction of Bargara Golf Course, whilst Janet decided to just do some things around the local area. It was about a 20 minute drive to the course and no trouble getting a game when we got there. We have clubs with us, but Mark had to rent some, and tall people are obviously not that common in Bargara.

It is of course also the first round of the Mica Cup, not contested since our last trip in 2010. Defending Champion, Carole,  had a strong lead after 9 holes, but with a strong back nine, Mike managed to claw it back to a draw, with 35 points each. Mark struggled with his short clubs and crook knees and decided to have a rest after 14 holes. We caught up with him again at the 18th.

Lunch at the Bargara Golf Clubhouse was what you would expect from a country golf club. We were fortunate  enough to be entertained by live music from an era about 20 years before our time. Nevertheless there was a good crowd enjoying the entertainment, and pensioners lunch specials.

Have been fed and rehydrated, we were back in the car and off to the big smoke, Bundaberg, where fortunately they have a Dan Murphys. Some essential reprovisioning took place there, before we motored off to find Woolies at the Hinkler Central Shopping Centre. Even though we bought food yesterday, we still managed to add to it today.

We were back at the marina by 4pm, unloaded our goodies, filled the water tank on the boat, and are ready for a departure to Pancake Creek tomorrow. The forecast is for winds of somewhere between 15 and 25 knots from a southerly direction. That is about as accurate as the forecasts are up here. So the seas might be up a bit, but we should make good speed under sail.

The SE trade winds look like setting in now, with the forecast pretty much the same for the next week.
