After a very uncomfortable night at anchor, with wind against tide for most of the night, we pulled up anchor at 7 am and headed into the Great Sandy Straights to Garry's anchorage, about 12 nm from Pelican Bay. We rode the incoming tide all the way, as there are a few shallow spots getting into Garry's Anchorage.
We arrived at around 9 am, and there were boats everywhere, including a number of houseboats. We anchored well away back in the entrance channel. By lunch time about half of the boasts had gone, but we were happy where we were.
At low tide we are not to far from the exposed sand shoals, but still have enough water under us to stay afloat.
The Sand bank behind Mica at low tide is only about 15m away
When putting the mainsail away I noticed we had broken a couple of the mainsail slides. So on arriving at Garry's Anchorage, I got in touch with Windcraft to get some replacements (and spares) sent to Bundaberg Marina, our next stop at a major centre.
At bit of exercise before lunch is in order, so we found our way in to the beach in Mica's tender, and Janet on her kayak.
Carole, Mark and Janet on the beach with boats anchored in the background
Janet went off exploring in her kayak, whist Mark, Carole and I went for a bush walk.
The afternoon was spent relaxing and trying to catch some fish, unsuccessfully. Undersized whiting are about all we have caught to date. Janet caught a stingray from her kayak, and found some friendly fishermen to cut it loose.
We had a relaxed and enjoyable BBQ dinner on Koonya, and have planned to raise anchors just before 9am in the morning to join the crowd wishing to pass through the shallow water at Sheridan Flats at around the peak of the high tide.
