Monday 17th July 2017
Sadly, today Michelle and Cody have to head
home. It was great having them on board for a week, as we don’t get to see a
lot of them as they live in Perth.
The morning is occupied with packing and
making sure nothing is left behind, before we venture off , on foot, to the
ferry terminal at Port of Airlie at 10.45am. I scored Cody’s backpack, which I
am sure had a few bricks in it.
Despite the long walk, we were there by
11.20am, for an 11.30am check in. The terminal is very busy, and we are not
sure why there are so many people wanting to join the ferry which goes to
Hamilton Island and then on to Whitehaven Beach, before returning to Airlie. It
was only on our walk back to the marina that we noticed the large cruise ship,
Pacific Dawn, anchored way out off shore.
Obviously a number of the cruise ship customers were doing the
Whitehaven trip.

We farewelled Michelle and Cody and walked
back to the marina, through the town, which was also busy thanks to the cruise
ship influx.
After lunch on board, Cariole was off to
the laundry to wash sheets, towels and clothes before we venture back out of
the marina tomorrow. I did the fuel wharf run, just to top up the jerry cans
and unleaded for the outboard (which we used quite a bit last week).
When Carole went back to the laundry to
empty the driers, all of our towels were missing. A young German couple said
they had seen a young guy come in and take them, and out some laundry in the
drier they emptied, but tha t was the only clue we had. Carole went up to the
marina office to report it, and fortunately their closed circuit TV coverage of
the waterfront is pretty good. They identified a person who was carrying a bag out
of the laundry at about the time they went missing and recognized he was
wearing a uniform from one of the commercial operators on the marina. They
followed up with the operator and we soon received a call that the towels would
be returned. It was apparently a “mistake”.
The marina handled it very well, but the
story was a bit thin. In any case we are very grateful for their follow up and
action to recover our missing items. It is typical of this marina, the service
really is exceptional.
There wasn’t much left of the afternoon by
the time the dramas were resolved, but we are in good shape to head back out
into the islands for a few days, in what looks like very good conditions. Today
was another warm one at 27 C, with a bit of overnight rain last night.
