Saturday 10th June 2017
This morning started out like any other
first day at a marina, up at around 7am, had a hearty breakfast and got ready
to do the necessary chores, including laundry, washing the boat down filling
the fuel and water tanks etc.
We had noticed that Scintilla was still
anchored just off the marina, and to our great surprise , up came the anchor
and they motored into the berth right beside us, so finally we got to meet each
other. Chris and Chris (pretty easy to remember), are from Seattle. They left
there in 2012 in Scintilla, a CT 49 monohull, and have sailed up to Alaska,
down to Mexico and many other places on the way to Australia. After clearing customs in Bundaberg last
year, they sailed south to Sydney to get away from the cyclone season, and are
now venturing North of Bundaberg for the first time.
Everyone has a lot to do, so we organized
to catch up tis afternoon when all of our chores are done. I did the paperwork
and jerry can run, whilst Carole concentrated on the laundry and washing the
boat down.
As we were walking back to our berth, a
sugar ship was coming through the heads. It really is a pretty tight passage
for such a big vessel.
Once we had completed our boat duties, we planned
to walk into Burnett Heads to shop for groceries at the IGA there. Just as we were about to leave, a couple
stopped by for a chat, asking us if we knew where the Americans were. It turned
out that this couple Cambell and Anne, had also been on their boat Annecam (Bavaria
46 Cruiser), for 5 years. They bought it in Croatia and sailed it back to
Australia. Part of the passage was on a rally with Scintilla, so they know each
other. What a small world.
Anyway, they are coming around for
Sundowners at 4.30pm.
Finally, we headed off to Burnett Heads,
had lunch, bought our groceries and caught the IGA courtesy bus back to the
marina.
At 4.30pm, our guests arrived for
Sundownders and there was much discussion about anchorages North of here.
Scintilla has not been any further north than Bundaberg, so they were
particularly interested in the best places to visit. They will be in the marina
for another day or so, awaiting the delivery of a parcel from USA. Annecam is
departing in the morning, also heading for Pancake Creek, so we will see them
along the way and once we arrive.
Our guests were off to Cruisers Cove for
dinner, a little alcove that has been provided at the marina for cruisers which
includes a BBQ and basic plates, cutlery and glasses. Normally there is an
organised get together each Friday evening, but our new friends are in the know
and invite us to join them, as there is food left from last nights do, and
dinner is being provided for those in the know tonight.
Dinner was more than adequate and we met
some more very interesting people.
