Pearl Bay

Saturday 17th June 2017

Time to move on from Rosslyn Bay, we planned to sail up to Pearl Bay in company with Phil and Wendy, on Kite Runner.

Yet another Great Sunrise as we left Rosslyn Bay

We left the marina at 6am, as planned, to make sure we had enough water to get out on a falling tide, and set our sails outside the harbour. Phil was having trouble getting his main up and motored all the way. We sailed for about half the way and motored sailed the other half.

Conditions were pretty light with around 12 knots dead behind us at its best, nevertheless, in the morning we had enough angle for a broad reach.

We expected Pearl Bay to be quite a busy anchorage, based on past experience, but to our surprise, we were the only ones there when we arrived but were soon joined by only a few others, (a couple of power boats and 2 yachts).

Approaching the Narrow Entrance to Pearl Bay

The anchor was down by 2pm and we invited Phil and Wendy over for Sundowners at 4.30pm on Mica.

KIte Runner Anchored Nearby at Pearl Bay

There is no mobile phone or internet coverage in Pearl Bay, which is part of the Shoalwater Bay military training area, so we are completely shut off. Furthermore, VHF coverage is also non existence due to the hills that surround the bay, so we need to ring the coast guard at Yeppoon on the satellite phone to notify them we had arrived safely.

Pearl Bay is a very pretty anchorage, and we sat out in the cockpit with Phil and Wendy enjoying a few drinks before dark set in and they needed to get back to Kite Runner to ready themselves for tomorrows departure to Hunter Island.
