Off to Great Keppel

Thursday 29th

We were up bright and early to take Kathy and David to Rockhampton to catch their plane home. We managed to get them there on time, said our farewells and returned the hire car to the marina by 9 am.

                                                            Departing Rosslyn Bay

Our plan is to go to Great Keppel Island (only 8 nm) and spend the night there. Carole took the opportunity to do the washing in the meantime. At around 11am we departed Rosslyn Bay, motored out to Great Keppel Island and anchored at Leekes Beach on the northern side.

Dinghies were quickly lowered overboard and we were off to have a BBQ picnic on the beach using our portable gas cookers.  The beach was quite exposed to the swell, but there was no wind.

Laden with all of our equipment and food we headed to shore only to be swamped by a rogue shorebreak just as we we approaching the shore. Carole and I had an involuntary swim, as did the camera and the iphone, neither of which responded well to the drenching. Looks like a visit to the Telstra shop in Mackay. Not sure about the camera, but it was not our good one. The water temperature was up around 21 C so at least it was refreshing.

With the drama behind us we had a pleasant lunch on the beach, Carole and I eating our fish catch from Pancake Creek, followed by a walk along the beach to Leekes creek at the eastern end which appears to be navigable for small boats at high tide (just as well as they have big tides up here as most of it was dry at low tide, but there was a port marker buoy marking rocks on the eastern shore.)

We had leftover kebabs and fried rice for dinner. It was an uncomfortable anchorage with constant rolling all night and we didn't get the best nights sleep we have had so far. Tomorrow we plan to continue heading north.
