Anchors were up around 7 am and we had decided to head for Hexham Island, not an anchorage either of us had been to before, but looked attractive and was about the right distance out for a morning motor (once again no wind) and would give us an easy trip to the Percy Islands tomorrow.
We arrived at Hexham Island and had the anchor down at 12.30pm. This is a very pretty anchorage and we are the only 2 yachts here., sharing the bay with 4 families of fishermen who are camped on the beach and have serious fishing tinnies using the campsites as a base.
Our boats at anchor - Hexham Island
After lunch we went ashore, had a swim and had a wander around the beach, and had a chat to the campers. As it was a Saturday, the campers were out for a weekends fishing from the mainland and had some very basic campsites. The boats were out constantly, seeming to head a fair way out from the island. We saw a boat return late in the afternoon with 4 spanish mackeral of good size.
Bushwalking at Hexham Island
We caught a good sized bream off the back of our boat and Rod and Lee caught 2 edible fish and had fish for dinner.
At night the beach came to life, with open campfires in each of the 4 camping sites. The boats had all returned and were anchored off the beach a fair distance to allow for the approx 3 metre tide range here.
The breeze got up to around 10 knots overnight from the NE, not ideal for this anchorage, which is well protected against anything from the South, but it was not too uncomfortable and was certainly a place you would come back to. In the morning we plan to head off to the Percy Islands.
